Head's Headline
March has been an incredibly successful and action-packed month at school, filled with events celebrating World Book Day and Science Week, along with numerous sporting competitions. Unfortunately, we faced a narrow 4-3 defeat in the School Football Girls' National Cup semi-finals, held in Whitley Bay. Despite the result, it was an incredible effort, and we are immensely proud of the team's dedication and hard work.
Congratulations to our three students who participated in the English Speaking Union (ESU) public speaking competition held at our school this week. Although they did not advance to the national final, I would like to personally congratulate the students for their hard work and outstanding performances. The ESU judges praised them highly, noting that they "acquitted themselves very well in a contest of exceptionally high standards, with little to separate the teams overall."
We were treated to an incredible fashion show earlier in the month which showcased the amazing work of our Textiles students; thanks to Miss Georgiou and Mrs Twine for their organisation. If you're not doing so already, follow us on Instagram and Facebook where you can see a round up.
We are delighted to have been awarded the Isaac Physics School Bronze Award, recognising our commitment to integrating Isaac Physics assignments into our students' learning throughout the past academic year. This award acknowledges schools that consistently engage students with structured problem-solving tasks, as well as a deeper understanding of physics and mathematical reasoning.
Additionally, we are proud to have received an Area of Excellence (AoE) in Leadership and Ethos from Challenge Partners, a national network dedicated to school improvement through collaboration and peer review. The accreditation highlights our dedication to holistic student development, with the review noting:"The school’s personal development curriculum is a comprehensive programme covering PSHE, citizenship, finance, and careers, alongside SMSC. It is meticulously planned and reviewed annually, with significant investment in staff training through CPDL sessions and resource support. Lessons follow high-quality guidance from the PSHE Association and are enriched through collaborations with organisations such as Bold Voices, Equaliteach, and Education Child Protection."
Congratulations to everyone involved in the whole-school production of Matilda. It was truly an outstanding performance. A special thank you to the entire Drama faculty for creating a truly fantastic and professional production. Below, you can read Stanley V., a Year 12 student who played Mr. Wormwood, sharing his insightful perspective on being part of Matilda.
On Friday 14th March, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Gianfranco Conti, CEO and founder of The Language Gym, along with teachers from across Hertfordshire and London for the ‘Becoming an E.P.I Teacher’ Language Conference. The event explored how Key Stage 3 EPI (extensive processing instruction) prepares students for GCSE, supports transition to Key Stage 4, and integrates input-to-output sequences to teach language and develop exam skills. This conference is just one example of our commitment to providing exceptional learning opportunities beyond our immediate community. Thank you to Mrs. Floyd for her dedication and effort in organising such a successful event.
This week saw the announcement of our new prefect team; after hustings, making speeches to their peers, and an interview with me, I am delighted to announce Charlotte G and Jonny M as Head Girl and Head Boy, and Shayna P and Rian M as their Deputies. I was truly impressed by the exceptional quality of the eight students who advanced to the final stage of interviews. Their confidence, depth, humanity, humor, and intelligence were truly inspiring. Congratulations to the newly appointed senior prefect team and prefect team, and thank you to the outgoing prefects for their outstanding contributions.
I look forward to seeing you at this evening's Easter Concert. We are privileged to have a remarkable venue for such performances. Special thanks to the staff and students whose efforts make these concerts possible as well as the PA for providing refreshments during the evening.
Finally, I would like to wish all of our Muslim families Eid Mubarak, a Happy Easter and a Happy Passover over the holiday period, and best wishes to anyone else celebrating religious festivals over the break.
Toby Sutherland
Headteacher, St Clement Danes School
It's extraordinary the things that can turn into extra-curricular, pastoral and educational resources for our school. This month, chocolates, crisps, sweets, skirts, jumpers, blazers, bottles of beer, J2O, water, fizzy drinks and glasses of wine have raised more than £3000 just by mixing them with some great volunteer effort selling refreshments at Matilda and at Thursday night's Easter Concert and running a second-hand uniform sale.
On Monday night we approved bids from school staff to purchase 40 History textbooks, equipment for a new after-school club, revision guides for Politics and Social Science, more than £400 worth of new books for the library and some equipment for Business Studies. At the PA meeting, Mr Sutherland spoke at length about the unprecedented level of funding pressure schools, including SCD, are feeling at this point in time and how invaluable this support is.
Like you, all those that helped are ridiculously over-subscribed timewise and the more of us there are the easier this much needed fundraising becomes. Please message us on scdpavolunteers@gmail.com to be added to the list of parents who give us an hour or two.
Keep an eye on your inboxes this week as we'll be sending out details of our next event. We relocated our ever-popular Comedy Night from its usual residence in October to May, the 17th to be precise. Tickets go on sale this week and are limited, so act fast. It's a great lineup of professional comedians and is always a fun night - and who knows what the cash raised will next buy your children..?
Wishing you all a good Easter break,
SCD PA
On 8th April 1987 2 Burleigh and 2 Clement played a marathon non-stop football match which was reported in the school magazine by Nicholas Back, David Rolfe and Andrew Lee.The game lasted four hours and there were 100 goals. At the end of each hour there was a penalty shoot-out which increased the scores.
The match started at 12 and finished at 4 pm. At the beginning of the game the players started off strongly and enthusiastically but as the game wore on enthusiasm dropped as brows started to sweat and legs started to ache.
During lunch a large number of supporters came to watch and cheer us on. A collection bucket collected £38 - we hope to get over £250 which is going towards the Zeebrugge disaster fund for bereaved relatives.
The Anchor Fund, established over 20 years ago by St Clement Danes School, enhances students' experiences from Year 7 to Year 13 by providing additional, high-quality resources that state funding cannot cover. Supported by regular parental donations, the fund has contributed hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years, enriching students' education through resources like Astroturf, science equipment, music keyboards, Chromebooks, and air fryers.
We need parents' help and support to continue enriching and enhancing our students' experience. Even a small monthly donation can make a significant difference. Please support the school by contributing to the Anchor Fund today.
Thank you to your generous monthly donations, we have purchased a rocket launcher within the Science faculty, providing hands-on opportunities to explore the principles of physics, sparking curiosity, and inspiring students to experiment and innovate.
Well done to all our students who participated in our whole-school production of Matilda. Below, you can read Year 12 student Stanley V’s review of his experience playing Mr. Wormwood...

On Friday 14th March, our Year 9 students participated in an exciting engineering day hosted by Smallpeice Trust, an educational charity dedicated to inspiring young people to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
We are proud to announce that our school has been awarded the Gold Equalities Award by EqualiTeach, a national organisation dedicated to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in education.
From the 18th - 22nd of February, a group of A level Geography students travelled to Iceland for a packed week of exploring the country’s beauty and stunning landscapes...
